The
game-Poker
Poker is an admired card game played with two or else more players
who lay a wager on the value of their cards. It is essentially
a part of gambling and is played either for chips purchased
from the game banker or the money betted upon. The player who
in the end holds the best hand wins.
The
game is played worldwide but USA, the country of its origination
surpasses rest of the countries as far as the games popularity
is concerned. Both the games are played with a deck of 52 cards,
with a joker being included sometimes. 2 to 10 people can play
at one go, though the perfect game consists of 5 players. Each
player plays with 5 cards betting on as to who holds the best
card combination by slowly and steadily raising the stakes until
either -
• There is a showdown, that is when the best card combination
wins all the stakes (‘the pot’); or
• All but one player gives up betting and is dropped out
of play, when the last person to raise wins the pot without
a showdown.
History
of Poker in USA
The
American civil war saw the inclusion of many new additions in
the game of poker. The two common basic forms of poker played
across the world, that is stud poker and draw poker gained reorganization
as well as popularity during this era. Another form of poker
came up during this era was straight poker. Playing of straight
poker involves 5 players, with each player dealing with five
cards face down, wherein bets are made, and the showdown takes
place without any new cards being drawn.
Various
phrases and jargon used in the game such as blue chip, ace in
the hole, pass the buck, poker face, and so on forms a part
of the daily vocabulary used by the Americans. This is enough
to give an insight into the popularity of the game in the country.
Origination
of Poker:
The
game forms a crucial part of the US culture. The history and
the origination of the game is a debatable topic. The birth
of the game can be debated back to first or second decade of
the 19th century. The game is first known to appear in New Orleans,
a former French territory ceded to the United States by the
Louisiana Purchase of 1803. This marks USA as the father of
this game. The game that was born in New Orleans popularized
like a virus throughout the country, courtesy Mississippi boats,
which were a favorite gambling haunt. At this point, poker was
a 20 game card which was than replaced by 52 deck game in 1837.
During the period of 1857, joker was included in the deck, which
marked the end of European influence on the game if any, and
the game became completely Americanized. The game developed
further and further with passing periods, with different time
periods witnessing different aspects of the game-poker.
1970 is considered as the first year to see the beginning of
the first world series of poker, and after that the popularity
of the game throughout the world has seen no ends. Poker is
not only confined to World Series but was followed by many other
world wide series like the shooting star, the legends of poker
to name a few.
Online
poker- Poker is like a staple for the casino industry and the
online version of the game exploded with popularity with the
bulging of the online casino industry.
The
game today is not confined to championships and series but is
an integral part of the entertainment industry like casinos
and is even played at homes for fun within the family. The mind
or luck game as it is better called is not confined and bound
by many rules and regulations and nor is the game a cheating
game. It’s a game, a simple sport, which involves big
money, big people and big crowds.
